Course
Aims: “Who am
I?” is one of the great questions that cuts across religion, philosophy and
psychology. This question is not just academic but transformative –
Discovering who we are changes who we are. Indeed, the quest for individual
self-discovery is the quest for truth and for for virtue/happiness/enlightenment.
It is tough to answer one question without the others. The goal of this course
is to expose students to various paths that have been used to search for the
true self. These are deep issues; we will just touch the surface. Text:
A packet of readings will be made available by the instructor. Grading:
This course is graded as Pass/Fail. Each student will have three requirements
that must be met in order to pass the course. 1. Each student must show up to
class (two absences are allowed per person and attendance will be taken). 2.
Each student must read the required material. 3. Each students must bring 2-3
questions to each class based on the readings for that class. Some of these
questions will be used to foster class discussion. All students are responsible for maintaining
the highest standards of honesty and integrity in every phase of their academic
careers. The penalties for academic dishonesty are severe and ignorance is not
an acceptable defense. THIS SYLLABUS IS A WORKING DOCUMENT. CHANGES
